Cllr Penny Gowland

Borough Councillor for Abbey Ward, County Councillor for West Bridgford North Division

Penny is a Rushcliffe Borough Council Councillor and Nottinghamshire County Councillor. She has lived in West Bridgford, within the North division, for twenty three years and has seen many changes in that time. Her daughters went to Lady Bay and Rushcliffe Schools.

Penny teaches physics at the University of Nottingham and carries out research on MRI, developing it to do new things, and applying it to study different aspects of medicine and biology. (Ask her about MRI at your peril as she loves talking about it and will talk about it for ever!)

Penny believes that society must work for everyone, and that no one should be left behind. She has been deeply concerned about global warming since the late 1980s but she is optimistic that ultimately humans will do the right thing for the whole planet.

She describes her politics as green socialism. She believes that localism (operating within national and international democratic frameworks) is the key to producing a fairer and more sustainable world.

Penny keeps residents up to date with her activities as a councillor with blog posts on this website and via her facebook page.

About Me

Hi, I’m Penny. I am a physicist who researches into MRI at the University of Nottingham (did you know MRI was invented in Nottingham?- not by me I should add). I live in West Bridgford with my husband, chickens, rabbits and now ducks, who we try to let run free as far as possible. I have two daughters who went to local schools but have currently moved away for work. I’m sure they will be drawn back to Nottinghamshire soon!

I am a Rushcliffe Borough Councillor, where I sit on the planning committee and am the Labour party spokesperson for housing issues. I have long been concerned about homelessness and I am a strong advocate of the ‘Housing First’ movement. I am very concerned about the environment and I cannot believe that we still don’t ensure that all new housing meets high environmental standards.

I am passionate about my local community and spend as much time as possible speaking to residents and helping improve the local area.
